How a Smart House can be used in TeleCare

This is the basis of our Smart Village project.

A smart house is a building that has been fitted out with technology to provide support for vulnerable people, or those with long term conditions, who might need assistance with activities of daily life.

Examples are; lights that come on in the bathroom when the person gets out of the bed, warning messages or alerts if someone leaves the house at night and smoke, gas or running water detectors, which can signal a hazardous situation to the client, neighbour or warden.

Smart houses can be expensive to install

There are two developments that may change the way we deliver telecare.

Smart Electricity Meters

These will be installed throughout the UK from 2013 to 2018. They will automatically provide information on power consumption on a half hour basis to utility companies. This information  will allow more efficient power generation and distribution and will provide households with detailed information on energy usage, so that they can reduce fuel bills. However, the technology can also be used to enable a smart house by providing information on which  electric appliances are being used at a particular time. The internet connection can also be  used to send data on hazardous situations to a housing association or care provider.

Wireless technology

That will allow installation of smart sensors and actuators without the need for rewiring these use microcomputers that allow the sensors to link up with a home hub or computer that can sort and prioritise the data so that the client or care provider is only notified if a hazardous situation occurs these situations can be agreed and set up individually for each client or resident.
