Sensory Systems - "Telehealth" "Telecare" "Smart Homes" & Assisted Living.
Using Technology to encourage Healthy Living and Wellbeing & supporting people with Disabilities and the Elderly to increase their independence and quality of life.
The use of Telecare and Telehealth technologies has a pivotal role to play in the assisted living sector. With nearly 12 million pensioners currently living in the UK and long term health conditions accounting for 69 percent of the primary and acute care budget in England alone, key building functions such as lighting, access and energy can utilise the communications revolution as part of the era of smart homes.
Kevin Doughty, Centre for Usable Home Technology at the University of York states: "Supporting the home carer should be a priority. The UK has more than seven million people providing unpaid care to relatives, neighbours or friends. A quarter of these each provide more than fifty hours of care each week, and the value of the care they provide is £87 billion each year – more than the entire cost of the NHS."
Sensory Systems are Developing Technologies to enable the ageing population and those with long-term health conditions to live with greater independence. People are living longer and as they grow old become frail, many will experience a longterm health condition. By applying innovation and technology we can help to meet these challenges and at the same time provide a means of assistive living that provides high-quality support for people in their own homes.
Why Technology assisted living?
As the demand for support of those with long-term health conditions is set to grow rapidly over the next 10 years and beyond. If the NHS and other UK organisations are to continue to offer high standards of health and care services, they will need to
make more use of technology to provide more home-based care and self-care.
In a recent government survey over 30% of people said they suffer from a long-term health condition. This group accounts for 52% of all GP appointments, 65% of all outpatient appointments and 72% of all inpatient bed days.
By using our vast experience in the Electronics and Computer Industry we will develop systems to recognise elderly and disabled people's emergencies in the home and summon help automatically. Using Sensor Technology, Sensory Systems aims to support high quality independant living and wellbeing for older people across Europe.
By integrating ICT with Sensory Devices, we will provide improved intervention and prevention of serious health problems, that would not normally be detected, thus allowing the person to live independently and for longer in their own home.
